Net neutrality is a hot-button, though often misunderstood, issue. Confusing the matter is the amount of misinformation being spread about regulating Internet service providers (ISPs) to ensure equal connectivity to different sites. Despite what some may say, deregulation could harm online freedom and access if ISPs restrict data to certain sites. Other claims that ISPs are already regulated by the FCC are untrue, given court rulings on the limitations of the FCC. ISPs also claim that speeds would increase with less regulation, but this is not true – many countries have net neutrality regulations and better speeds than the USA. Finally, the argument that regulations won’t matter because you have choice of your ISP is undermined by the fact that many areas have very few (if any) options.
